Healthy versions of the drink have been gaining strength in the market, combining traditional flavors and important nutrients for health

It’s common to find a series of drinks enriched with all sorts of nutrients in the markets, right? On that list, we have juices, teas, yogurts and even soft drinks (especially those free of sugar). But can you imagine if you could include a cold beer there? For know that this is already a reality!

Created by Ambev, Corona Cero Sunbrew is a light beer that hits the shelves with a novelty: its formula is composed of vitamin D. Yes, that’s exactly what you read! Now, there is a beer that can help you restore the levels of this nutrient that is essential for the body.

“One of the most important functions of vitamin D for the human body is the maintenance of bone health, being essential for the intestinal absorption of calcium. In addition, it is important for the body’s immune response, for proper muscle contraction and for regulating blood pressure”, says Carol Calloni, professor of Nutrition at the University Center of Serra Gaúcha (FSG).

According to the manufacturer, the new drink is the only beer in the world that offers the addition of the so-called “sunshine vitamin”. Furthermore, as it has no alcohol content, the product can be consumed at different times of the day and by people with certain restrictions.

The unprecedented launch reinforces the trend of calls “healthy beers”, which meet the different needs of the public that wants to eat better without giving up the traditional barley drink. That’s because, currently, there are already low carb, gluten-free options and even versions with antioxidant properties that help restore nutrients post-workout.

How are healthy beers produced?

To preserve the natural flavor of the drink and, at the same time, bring benefits to health, a manufacturing process is carried out that involves changes in the ingredients and way of preparing the beer. The main one is the reduction (or removal) of alcohol in the formula.

“Usually, the ingredients used are water, malt and hops (and, in some versions, rice). And the process takes place by fermenting these ingredients, followed by the removal of alcohol (vacuum distillation) and harmonization to ensure a pleasant taste to the product. Natural ingredients and aromas can be incorporated, such as fruit, for example, or cane sugar to give body to the drink”, explains nutritionist Cátia Medeiros.

The expert says that hops are the ingredient that gives the characteristic bitter taste of beer and, on top of that, it has the role of a natural preservative due to its bactericidal effect, in addition to its antioxidant action.

“The malt is rich in some vitamins and minerals that can offer some benefits. It has potassium, which helps with the relaxation of blood vessels, being interesting in blood pressure control, for example. It contains magnesium, as well as folic acid and iron. It also has complex B and selenium, which is an important mineral for proper brain functioning,” adds the specialist.

Initially, the new Corona Cero Sunbrew will only be available in a 330ml long neck format. To try the drink, look for the product on the Empório da Cerveja website or in some bars, restaurants and supermarkets in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
